WiFi Extender : Range extender

Model : TP link archer C54 AC1200

🌐 Part 1: Main Router Preparation

Before connecting your Archer C54, ensure your main ISP router (e.g., AIS, True, NT, 3BB) is properly configured to prevent setup failures:

  1. Enable DHCP Server: Make sure the main router is set to automatically assign IP addresses (enabled by default) so it can assign an IP to the Archer C54.
  2. Set Wireless Security: It is recommended to set the main router's Wi-Fi security to WPA2-PSK (AES), which offers the best stability and compatibility with the Archer C54.
  3. Check the LAN Port: (For wired modes) Ensure that the LAN port on the back of the main router is working properly and not locked/reserved for an IPTV box.
⚠️ Note: Main routers from different internet service providers (such as Huawei, ZTE, T3 Technology) have unique management interfaces and default IP addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.100.1). Please consult your provider's specific manual or contact their call center for assistance with accessing their settings.

🔌 Part 2: Selecting a Mode and Setting Up the Archer C54

Choose your desired operating mode and follow either Method A (Via App) or Method B (Via Web Browser) below.

🛠️ Mode 1: Router Mode or Access Point (AP) Mode (Wired Connection)

  • Router Mode: Connects via Ethernet cable from the main router to the WAN port, creating a separate local network.
  • Access Point Mode: Connects via Ethernet cable to the WAN port to expand Wi-Fi coverage while remaining inside the main router's local network (recommended if you want to share files/printers).

Method A: Setup via the TP-Link Tether App (Easiest)

  1. Hardware Connection: Plug in the Archer C54. Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on your main router to the blue WAN port on the Archer C54.
  2. Connect to Default Wi-Fi: Open Wi-Fi settings on your phone and connect to the default Wi-Fi network of the Archer C54 (printed on the sticker underneath the device).
  3. Open the App: Download and open the TP-Link Tether app. Select the Archer C54 under local devices.
  4. Create a Login Password: Create a new password for managing the router in the future.
  5. Select Operation Mode:
  • For Router Mode: Select Dynamic IP as the connection type and tap Next.
  • For Access Point Mode: Go to the Tools menu (bottom right) > Operation Mode > select Access Point, and tap Save. The device will reboot once. After it reboots, open the Wireless menu.
  1. Set Wi-Fi Name & Password: Customize your new Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Tap Apply/Save to complete.

Method B: Setup via a Web Browser (PC or Phone without downloading the app)

  1. Hardware Connection: Connect an Ethernet cable from the main router to the WAN port of the Archer C54. Connect your PC to the Archer C54 via Wi-Fi or another Ethernet cable.
  2. Access the Web Interface: Open a web browser, type tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, and press Enter.
  3. Create a Login Password: Set a new password to access the web management page.
  4. Select Operation Mode:
  • For Router Mode: Follow the Quick Setup wizard. Select your Time Zone (GMT+07:00) and choose Dynamic IP as the Internet Type.
  • For Access Point Mode: Skip the Quick Setup wizard. Go to the Advanced tab > Operation Mode > select Access Point, and click Save. Wait for the device to reboot; it will automatically take you to the Quick Setup wizard for AP Mode.
  1. Set Wi-Fi Name & Password: Enter your preferred Wi-Fi name and password for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Review the configuration and click Save / Finish. Your internet is now ready to use.

📡 Mode 2: Range Extender Mode (Wireless Expansion, No Ethernet Cable Needed)

Used to capture the Wi-Fi signal from your main router and re-broadcast it to expand coverage.

Method A: Setup via the TP-Link Tether App

  1. Preparation: Plug in the Archer C54 close to your main router first (to ensure a stable initial connection). Connect your phone to the default Wi-Fi network listed under the Archer C54.
  2. Open the TP-Link Tether app > select Archer C54 > create a login password for the device.
  3. Go to the Tools menu (bottom right corner) > select Operation Mode > choose Range Extender, and tap Save(the device will reboot once).
  4. After it reboots, reconnect your phone to the Archer C54's Wi-Fi, open the app, and the system will scan for nearby networks.
  5. Select your main home Wi-Fi network and enter your main Wi-Fi password correctly (if incorrect, it cannot extend the signal).
  6. Configuring the Extended Wi-Fi Name & Password:
  • To use the same name/password as the main router: Tap Copy Main Router. This allows your phone to seamlessly switch signals (roam) as you walk around the house.
  • To customize the name: You can edit the Wi-Fi name (e.g., adding _EXT at the end). However, the "Password" must remain identical to the main router's password (the system locks this by default for network compatibility; you cannot set a different password for the extended network).
  1. Tap Next / Save to apply the settings. Unplug the Archer C54 and relocate it to a midway point between the main router and the Wi-Fi dead zone.

Method B: Setup via a Web Browser

  1. Plug in the Archer C54 near the main router. Connect your PC/phone to its Wi-Fi network, open a web browser, go to tplinkwifi.net, and set a login password.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab > Operation Mode > select Range Extender, and click Save (the device will reboot).
  3. Once the web page reloads, it will enter the Quick Setup wizard and automatically scan for networks.
  4. Select your main router's 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks one by one, enter the main Wi-Fi password correctly, and click Next.
  5. Configuring the Extended Network Settings:
  • Network Name (SSID) Field: You can leave it as the default generated name or delete it and type a new name to separate the networks.
  • Password Field: The system automatically locks this to match the main router's password (it cannot be changed to a different password).
  1. Review the settings on the Summary page and click Save / Finish. Once the signal light on the device remains solid, move it to your desired location.

🛠️ Part 3: Troubleshooting "Connected, No Internet" (No Data Flow / Frequent Disconnections)

If your setup is complete but your devices display "No Internet," or if the Archer C54 cannot find your main router's Wi-Fi signal, it is usually caused by channel interference from neighbors or the main router using a channel that is too high for the Archer C54 to scan.

📶 Solution: Adjusting the Wireless Channel

Log into the management page of your Main Router (the source router), navigate to the Wireless Settings menu for each frequency band, and change the Channel from Auto to a specific number:

  • 2.4GHz Band: Manually select a channel between 1 and 11 only (the recommended and most stable channels are 1, 6, or 11). Avoid channels 12 and 13, as many client devices and regional routers do not support or see signals on these channels.
  • 5GHz Band: Manually select a channel between 36 and 100 (e.g., 36, 40, 44, 48). These are lower frequency (Non-DFS) channels that allow the Archer C54 to lock onto the signal with the best stability. Avoid setting it to Auto or using channels above 149 if you experience dropped connections.

After clicking Save to change the channel on the main router, turn the Wi-Fi off and back on on your devices, or reboot the Archer C54 once. The internet connection should restore and run at full speed.
